GEORGE Thomson Brock was the youngest son of William Manson Brock. Although he seems to have followed in the family line of Stonecutters, there is a family story which suggested he became a professional roller-skater. Born 8 January 1890 at Seamount Place, Aberdeen, although he subsequently refers to Barre, Vermont as his birthplace. In 1920 he can be found at East Washington Street, Phoenix, Arizona, aged 30, with 22 year old wife Thelma Remy. She was of French descent. In the 1930 US Census he can be found with wife Thelma and daughter Dorothy Marion, aged 9, living in Norwich Drive, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood George and Thelma's occupations are given as "working in motion pictures" – so perhaps there is some truth in the roller skating rumour! On the Internet Movie Database there is a George Brock and Thelma Brock listed as extras in a couple of films. In George's case it was in Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" (1925). Thelma is listed as appearing in "The Bargain Hunt" (1928). Maybe George was the first Aberdonian to appear in a Hollywood production... who knows? |
