OUR grandfather John Edwards, born 15 October 1882 in Arbroath had seven brothers and one sister, Maggie (b1891). The brothers were William b1884; George b1888; Charles Henry (aka Harry) b1889; Caithness b1893; David b1895; James b1897 and William Grieve, who I think was a half-brother. I remember dad saying he had uncles in Brooklyn... the evidence suggests this was probably Brookline, an area of Boston, Massachusetts, George, Harry and James, all emigrated to Boston. Harry and George emigrated together in 1911. Harry Edwards can be found in shipping manifests and can be found in the 1910 Census living with a cousin and his family, at Coffey Street, Neponset, Dorchester, Boston. At this time he was an apprentice in a Machine Shop. By the 1920 Census Harry is married to his 'Scotch' wife Jennie and is a Clerk on the railroad. He has two children. His cousin is living a few doors along in the same street. Ten years on and Harry is an Office Clerk on the railroad and living with his family at Southern Avenue, Dorchester, Boston. Meanwhile George in 1920 is a Chauffeur and living with his wife Mary. By 1930 he is in Brookline Town, still a Chauffeur with the Red Cab company. James, I think emigrated in 1925 aboard SS Samaria and went to live with his brother George, initially. I think he became a Freight Handler on the railroad. |
